Frequently Asked Questions

Do you sell Bio-Alcamid?

Short Answer

Long Answer

Bio-Alcamid is a product injected under the skin to fill in hollow areas on the face and body. It is composed of 96% water and 4% synthetic reticulate polymer (polyalkymide). The resulting implant is natural-looking and soft to the touch. Some physical conditions that can benefit from Bio-Alcamid injections are:

  • localized fat loss, especially in the face (known as lipoatrophy or lipodystrophy), due to a number of causes including antiretroviral drugs taken for HIV
  • post-surgery scars

It can also be used for cosmetic purposes, such as filling in deep wrinkles or for lip enhancement.

Bio-Alcamid injections are performed by a plastic surgeon and the patient is given a local anaesthetic. The injected material does not migrate from the area in which it is placed yet can be easily removed, if necessary, because it is encapsulated in a thin layer of collagen.

Bio-Alcamid is manufactured by Polymekon Srl in Brindisi, Italy. It has been licensed for distribution in Canada by Pur Medical Corporation although it has been approved by Health Canada only for the treatment of HIV-related facial lipoatrophy. It has been used in European countries since 2001 and treatments are also available in Mexico.
